What Is It?

The Ducati Multistrada 1200 S is a premium adventure bike and is powered by a Euro 3 compliant liquid cooled 1,198.4 cc V-Twin Testastretta engine, producing 147.9 bhp at 9,250 rpm and maximum torque at 7,500 rpm. The engine is a de-tuned version of the 1198 Superbike.

You have Urban, Touring, Sport and Enduro modes to choose from. Sport firms up the suspension, provides aggressive power delivery and minimises traction control while Touring offers smoother power delivery and mid-level traction control.

Urban mode limits power to 100 bhp with smooth delivery and sets the suspension to handle potholes in town, with traction control set to level 7. At the extreme you then have Enduro mode with the same limited 100 bhp, longest travel on the suspension, minimal traction control and the option to turn off the ABS.

Over the standard 1200 you get the Ohlins electrically adjustable suspension and ABS as standard, but it weighs 3 kg more. It can automatically adjusted for a pillion with or without luggage and there is a custom settings mode. Storage is pretty good even without the option luggage, with a small glovebox in the right fairing and 3 litres under the pillion seat.

The 10-spoke 17" wheels take a 120/70 Pirelli Scorpion Trail tyre at the front and 190/55 at the rear.

Options include the rear hugger, 57 or 77 litre quick release panniers, 48 litre top box, 25 mm lower seat, heated grips, tyre pressure monitor, electric filler cap, centre stand, side bars and various Carbon bits.

The Sport version gets you Carbon Fibre cam belt covers, air intake cover, spoilers and rear hugger while the Touring version gets you panniers, heated grips, tyre pressure monitor and the centre stand.

Model History & Updates

2012: New seat, software update, 234 kg (wet) and Touring Titanium colour scheme. The 222 kg (wet) Pikes Peak special edition builds on the Sport and gets you a red/white/black colour scheme, red wheel stripes, seat detailing and Carbon Fibre Termignoni muffler / small screen / mudguard.

2013: New Sachs Skyhook suspension, revised engine, Bosch 9ME ABS, new headlight with LED low beam, 1199 Panigale style wheels, larger adjustable screen, bigger glove box and minor tweaks to front fairing but dry weight is up 2 kg at 194 kg.

245 kg (wet) Granturismo edition launched with 48 litre top box, 73 litre panniers, LED fog lights, 20 mm higher bars, comfort seat, heated grips, tall screen, engine bars and Pirelli Angel GT tyres. The Pikes Peak edition also gets Marchesini forged wheels.

2014: Touring D|air launched in conjunction with Dainese and their wireless connected airbag jackets. If you or your pillion fall off, or a collision is detected, the jackets inflate Back to the Future style in 45 milliseconds and it only adds 1 kg to the bike's weight.
