What Are Class 2 And Class 3 Mobility Scooters?
There are three classes of mobility vehicle in the UK:
Class 1
Manually propelled wheelchairs (not electric).
Class 2
Powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters intended for paths, pavements and shopping centres but with a maximum speed of 4 mph (6 km/h).
The class is split into travel scooters at the lower end, with smaller wheels and a lighter build than pavement focused scooters at the top end. Some even dismantle or fold, making them easy to transport in a car boot.
Class 3
Powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters intended for use on roads with a speed limit of 50 mph or above, at a maximum speed of 8 mph (12 km/h).
They can be used on the pavement up to 4 mph, so tend to have a speedometer and must be registered with the DVLA.
They tend to be heavier and more expensive but usually offer greater range and more comfortable seats.
Do I Need To Insure My Mobility Scooter?
It isn't a legal requirement but might be a good idea to cover the value of the scooter, your own personal safety and the safety of others. Insurance tends to be around £50 - £60 but will vary with the value of the scooter, your area and individual circumstances.
Some training courses are also available to hone your driving skills.
Do I Have To Wear A Helmet On A Mobility Scooter?
Legally the answer is no however you only have one head and pavements are as hard as roads.
Which Mobility Scooters Are Best For Hills?
Class 3 mobility scooters tend to be better for hills and longer journeys due to their more powerful motors, huge battery and larger wheels.
Can You Fit Two People On A Mobility Scooter?
You may be able to physically fit two people on a large Class 3 scooter with three to four wheels but legally they are meant to be an "invalid carriage" for one person registered as disabled.
Is A Golf Buggy A Mobility Scooter?
While they may feature similar technology to class two and three mobility scooters they are not technically "invalid carriages" for use by a disabled person and therefore cannot be used on the road or pavements in the same way as a mobility scooter.
How Did We Rank Our Top Ten?
We looked at all the class two and three mobility scooters you can buy new and picked the top contenders, taking into account style, power, technology and value for money.
