What Is It?

The Honda CG125 is a learner friendly naked bike and is powered by an air-cooled single cylinder 124 cc four stroke engine, producing 11 bhp at 9,000 rpm and maximum torque at 7,000 rpm.

Features include:

  • Steel tubular frame
  • 114 mm drum brakes
  • 27 mm telescopic fork with 115 mm travel
  • Dual shocks with 80 mm travel and adjustable pre-load
  • Five speed gearbox
  • Kick starter and 6V electrics
  • Neutral warning light
  • Washable air filter

The cheap as chips CG125 is one of the simplest Honda bikes and this contributes hugely to its reliability. It was designed for production and sale in China, Brazil, Thailand and Indonesia but also found its way around the globe.

Crucially it's a simple pushrod engine with long service intervals and more tolerance to lazy maintenance. That's mainly because Honda realised that the biggest market for it, in Asia, wanted precisely that; a machine they could flog every day until it finally keeled over.

It can also cope with more overloading than you might expect i.e. several people or rider and livestock. Even the lights are basic, being powered by a magneto rather than from a battery. The 18" wheels take a 70/100 tyre at the front and 90/90 at the rear.

In the UK, when the new learner 120 cc plus test law landed mid 90s, it was in prime place to scoop up big sales from riding schools. Anyone in the market for a 100 cc machine before the law suddenly needed a cheap, easy to maintain and relatively disposable 125.
